Effects of chemical fertilizers and organic fertilizers application on yield increasing and tuber size of Jerusalem artichoke(Helianthus tuberosus L.)

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of chemical fertilizers, organic fertilizers and the combinations of these fertilizers on productivity and tuber size of Jerusalem artichoke Helianthus tuberosus L.). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Eight treatments consisted of 1) control, 2) chemical fertilizer formula 15-15-15 at the rate of 50 kg Rai-1 (0.16 ha), 3) compost
recommended by HRH princess Sirindhorn at the rate of 2,000 kg Rai-1 , 4) high quality organic fertilizer at the rate of 400 kg Rai-1
, 5) cattle manure at the rate of 1,600 kg Rai-1 , 6) chemical fertilizer formula 15-15-15 at the rate of 50 kg Rai-1 plus compost recommended by HRH princess Sirindhorn at the rate of 1,000 kg Rai-1, 7) chemical fertilizer formula 15-15-15 at the rate of 25 kg Rai-1 plus high quality organic fertilizer at the rate of 200 kg Rai-1
and 8) chemical fertilizer formula 15-15-15 at the rate of 25 kg Rai-1
plus cattle manure at the rate of 800 kg Rai-1 . Compost recommended by HRH princess Sirindhorn at the rate of 2,000 kg Rai-1 had the highest fresh tuber yield of 2,880 kg Rai-1
followed by , chemical fertilizer formula 15-15-15 at the rate of 25 kg Rai-1 plus high quality organic fertilizer at the rate of 200 kg Rai-1 (2,624 kg Rai-1 ) and high quality organic fertilizer at the rate of 400 kg Rai-1 (1,367 kg Rai-1 ), respectively, whereas chemical fertilizer formula 15-15-15 at the rate of 50 kg Rai-1
and control gave the lowest fresh tuber yield of 1,339 and 1,367 kg Rai-1 , respectively. It is interesting to note here that compost
recommended by HRH princess Sirindhorn at the rate of 2,000 kg Rai-1 and high quality organic fertilizer at the rate of 400 kg Rai-1 tended to have the highest extra large tubers of 452 and 409 kg Rai-1 , accounting for 19.5 and 14.2% of total fresh tuber weight, respectively, followed by chemical fertilizer formula 15-15-15 at the rate of 25 kg Rai-1 plus high quality organic fertilizer at the rate of 200 kg Rai-1 which had 333 kg Rai-1 (12.7% of total fresh tuber weight). Cattle manure at the rate of 1,600 kg Rai-1 tended to have the highest large tubers of 501 kg Rai-1 (28% of total tubers) followed by chemical fertilizer formula 15-15-15 at the rate of 25 kg Rai-1 plus high quality organic fertilizer at the rate of 200 kg Rai-1 which had large tubers of 448 kg Rai-1 (18.6%) and , high quality organic fertilizer at the rate of 400 kg Rai-1 that produced large tubers of 466 kg Rai-1 , respectively.
