Abstract

Diatomaceous earth (DE), or diatomite, is a natural sedimentary material derived from the fossilized remains of diatoms, microscopic algae that have accumulated over millions of years. This study explores the structural characteristics and multifunctional applications of DE, particularly in environmental protection and sustainable agriculture.  DE’s high porosity and large surface area contribute to its exceptional adsorption capacity, enabling the removal of contaminants such as heavy metals and pollutants from water. Analytical techniques, including X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), were employed to examine the physical and chemical properties of DE, revealing its crystalline structure and surface morphology. The results indicate that DE's primary component, amorphous silica, can be effectively utilized as a natural filter, insulating material, and adsorbent in industrial and environmental contexts. Additionally, this study highlights the potential of DE in agriculture, where it enhances soil aeration, retains moisture, and serves as a natural pest control agent. DE’s non-toxic nature makes it a favorable alternative to synthetic chemicals in farming, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices. DE’s efficiency in specific applications, such as heavy metal adsorption and pollution control, can be optimized through surface modification. This research underscores the versatile nature of DE and its vital role in promoting sustainability in various industries while advocating for further exploration into its surface chemistry and environmental benefits.
