Abstract

Sugarcane harvesters play an important role in the reduction of atmospheric PM2.5 caused by the burning of sugarcane crop and the shortage of labor in sugarcane harvesting. This research aimed at the performance evaluation of medium-size (164-179 kW) and large-size (251-260 kW) sugarcane harvester used in Lower North region of Thailand. Two models of medium-size and two models of large-size sugarcane harvesters were tested in Khon Kaen-3 variety sugarcane field with the row space of 1.72 m and the average row length of 284.2 m at Amphoe Bueng Na Rang, Phichit province. The average moisture of the loam soil, with the soil bulk density of 1.16 g·cm-3, in the field at the depth of 0-10 cm was 13.87%db. The results showed that the speed and the field capacity of the medium-size and large-size harvesters were significantly different. The average speeds of the medium-size and the large-size harvesters were 1.04 and 1.50 m·s-1, while the average field capacities were 30.93 and 49.62 tons per hour, respectively. The contamination percentages were not significantly different between the two groups of harvesters. However, the farmers in Lower North region mostly grow their sugarcane with the row space of 1.50 m, which is suitable for medium-size harvesters as the wheels would not damage the sugarcane stubble at row spacing of 1.50 and 1.72 m but the large-size is not suitable for the row spacing of 1.50 m.

Sugarcane harvesters play an important role in the reduction of atmospheric PM2.5 caused by the burning of sugarcane crops and the shortage of labor in sugarcane harvesting. This research aimed at the performance evaluation of two medium-size (MSH) (164 and 179 kW) and two large-size (LSH) (251 and 260 kW) sugarcane harvester used in Lower North region of Thailand for decision makingto select the size of sugarcane harvester suitablefor row spacing and row length. Two MSHs and two LSHs were tested in a Khon Kaen-3 variety sugarcane field with the row spacing of 1.72 m, the average row length of 287.73 m, average yield of 10.93tonrai-1, 6 rows per each plot and average area of 1.86 rai plot-1, 3 replications at Amphoe Bueng Na Rang, Phichit province. The average soil moisture and bulk density of the loam soil at the depth of 0-10 cm was 13.72%d.b. and 1.16 g cm-3, respectively. The results showed that the speed and field efficiency of MSH and LSH were significantly different. The average speeds of MSH and LSH were 1.06 and 1.51 m s-1, while the average field capacities were 35.14 and 44.05 tonh-1, respectively. The MSH2 was found to have field efficiency and time efficiency of 83.04 and 85.78%, respectively, which were significantly higher than the other 3 Models. The billet lengths between 17.2 to 25.0 cm were foundinsignificantly different on bulk density of billet, however, the longer billets were found having higher percentage of contamination than short billets. However, the farmers in the Lower North region mostly grow their sugarcane with the row spacing of 1.50 m and small farm size (less than 50 rai). The MSHs were suitable for the row lengthof 287.73 morshorter andtherow spacing of 1.50 or 1.72 m as the wheels would not damage the sugarcane stubble and the payback period was lower than 4 years
