Foliar application of chitosan elicits growth, multiple shoot production and pharmacological secondary metabolites in Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst.) cultured under hydroponics
Main Article Content
Abstract
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst.) is a medicinal herb for enhancing cognitive ability, memory and brain maintenance. Brahmi has important bioactive substances for improving the nervous system which is bacoside A (bacoside A3, bacopaside X, bacopaside II and bacopasaponin C). The objective of this research was to study the effect of chitosan elicitor on growth and accumulation of bacoside A in Brahmi cultured in DFT hydroponic system. Brahmi plants were sprayed with chitosan at the concentrations of 0, 100, 200 and 500 mg/l every week during the 2nd - and 6th weeks after acclimatization. The results showed that chitosan promoted growth by increasing fresh weight, dry weight and shoot number. All concentrations of chitosan enhanced the accumulation of total bacoside with highest significantly difference from control. This study emphasizes that chitosan (200 mg/l) can be used as a safe, economical, and efficient elicitor for promoting plant growth and increasing secondary metabolites or bioactive compounds of magnificent medicinal plants. This finding can apply to Brahmi cultivating for supply dietary supplement industry.
