Abstract

Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5 mm that contaminate the environment. Tadpoles can serve as bioindicators of microplastic contamination in aquatic ecosystems. This study aimed to investigate microplastic contamination in tadpoles from Ban Klang Subdistrict, Nakhon Phanom District, Nakhon Phanom Province. The analysis included abundance, size, shape, color, and polymer types, as well as comparisons among sampling sites and species. Five tadpole species were examined: Fejervarya limnocharis, Polypedates leucomystax, Microhyla heymonsi, Occidozyga lima, and Hoplobatrachus rugulosus. Microplastics were detected in all species and at all sampling sites, with a total of 363 pieces (13.44±6.54 pieces/individual). P. leucomystax showed the highest mean contamination (19.33±4.93 pieces/individual), while O. lima had the lowest (11.11±4.99 pieces /individual). However, no significant differences were found among sampling sites or species (p>0.05). The most common size range of microplastics was >100–500 µm (45.21%). Fibers were the predominant shape (71.90%), and blue was the most frequently observed color (44.90%). The dominant polymer type was polyester (83.20%), mostly occurring as blue fibers. These findings indicate the presence of microplastic contamination in the studied aquatic environments and provide baseline data for future assessment and management strategies to mitigate microplastic pollution.
