Services for the Thai Elderly Provided by Nursing Homes in Bangkok

This research has the purpose to study services provided by nursing homes in Bangkok for the Thai elderly. This study was a qualitative research conducted by means of in-depth interviews. The key informants were 15 nursing home business owners. Data analyses were performed by making conclusions based on content analysis and data comparison.
The results show that the services can be categorized into 5 groups as follows: 1) nursing care services; 2) healthcare services; 3) rehabilitation services; 4) psychological services; and 5) social services. 1) Nursing care consists of 7 aspects: the care of assets and property by writing a contract, theft/loss prevention, monitoring of the elderly with CCTV, Electronic Access Control System, Accident Measurement in the Elderly Body, medication reminders, assistance with locomotion, and especially fire alarms. 2) Healthcare consists of 4 aspects: acute treatment, treatment of chronic disease, palliative/end-of-life care and self-healing care. 3) Rehabilitation consists of 5 aspects: proper rehabilitation planning, good internal health promotion, aging skills development to stimulate the brain, the promotion of specialized staff such as physiotherapists or caregivers, and provision of knowledge about the physical and mental rehabilitation of the elderly. 4) Psychological services consists of 5 aspects: planning and consideration to meet the mental and emotional needs of the elderly, frequent adjustments to the form of mental health care services to keep up with the times, use of tools to interpret and read the state of mind of the elderly, therapy robots, and being with someone close or with a peer; and 5) social services consists of 3 aspects: the standard of social care for the elderly, the delivery of social care workers to the home, and recruitment of children or grandchildren to help care for the elderly.
