Mathematics Classroom with Universal Design for Learning

Abstract

This research on “mathematics classroom with the universal design for learning” is intended to give guidance for managing the teaching and learning of mathematics up to international standards. The main points are 1) in managing education it is essential to consider the benefit to each individual student. Nowadays, students from each school are different in various aspects: learning ability, emotional quotient, social quotient, and cultural competence; and 2) teaching and learning of mathematics should be universally designed, with 3 aspects of flexibility: flexibility in various styles of representation, flexibility in action and expression, and flexibility in engagement; this could enhance students’ interest to choose, encourage them to put more effort into work, and raise their self-supervising skills.

Teaching and learning activities in mathematics classrooms need to be tailored to each student’s learning potential by utilizing instructional media, appropriate assessment of learning outcomes for each type of student, and providing the creativity of an appropriate learning environment that allows them to study happily. Universal learning design in mathematics classroom will definitely help all students with differing levels of abilities, making them more able to learn and understand. Finally, it provides a great advantage for the management of the teaching and learning of mathematics and the development of students to achieve their full learning potential and happiness.
