The Model of Information Literacy Instruction for the Bachelor Degrees’ Students of the Rajabhat Universities in Thailand

The purposes of this research were 1) to study the level of information literacy of Bachelor Degree students of the Rajabhat Universities in Thailand, 2) to study factors related to their information literacy and 3) to study the model of information literacy instruction. The population for this research was the 1st year–5th year students of the 2012 academic year of all the Rajabhat Universities in Thailand and the researcher used multi-stage random sampling to take a sample of 398 students from 8 Rajabhat Universities. The data were collected during 20 August to 30 September 2012 by a questionnaire which had a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient reliability rating of 0.846. The statistics used in this research were frequencies, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, factor analysis, and multiple regression analysis. For the third objective, to study the model of information literacy instruction, a focus group discussion method was used to obtain data from 2 information literacy experts, 2 local wisdom experts/village savants and 2 instruction/teaching model experts. The results of the research were as follows: 1) overall, the majority of Bachelor Degree students of the Rajabhat Universities in Thailand had a high level of information literacy and their information literacy consisted of 5 standards and 17 indicators, 2) the factors related to information literacy of the students were information searching experience, faculty of study, purpose of searching, and library use course experience, and 3) the research led to the proposed guidelines for developing a model of information literacy instruction for the Bachelor Degree students of the Rajabhat Universities in Thailand called the “TAEPE Model.” comprising 3.1) Task definition and identify potential sources 3.2) Accessing 3.3) Evaluation and synthesis 3.4) Presentation and 3.5) Ethical and legal use.
