The study of Citizenship through the Political Sociological Perspective

Abstract

 The academic paper is a review of the studies concerning citizenship through a political sociological perspective. Regarding the framework of citizenship education, it is important that politics and social movements at the level Individual and at the level of a group or community are considered through the dimensions of citizenship in all three dimensions, namely: membership of the political community, having rights as obligations and practices, which are components of the citizenship education framework. These three concepts are considered major foci of the framework that differ according to the social context. Based on the concept of Libertarianism, citizenship emphasizes the importance of individual freedoms, yet it is considered consisting of both an individual component and the subject of a collectivist involved. In addition, the concept of civic republicanism is found to be emphasizing the participation and collective responsibility of citizens, requires civic education to achieve civic morality, or civic virtue. Finally, the concept of Civic Communitarian which prioritizing the community or social values over the individual or personal values of the individual. Following this concept, social attention can be dedicated to group rights and collective rights in terms of politics, economy, society, especially rights to resources under a social commitment to building and maintaining a community through the expression of citizenship. As could be observed citizens regarding this concept could be found as someone who is aware of the problems occurring in their own political community through a collective or public consciousness. Therefore, the current citizenship education is a reflection of the state of citizenship which could be desirable in every society. However, in each different context of society, many aspects of status or characteristics of a citizen may be defined differently within the context of a particular political community.
