Abstract

The purposes of this research were to 1) examine the current and desired conditions of teacher development in organizing learning experiences to promote social and emotional learning (SEL) among young children, and 2) assess and prioritize the needs for teacher development in organizing learning experiences to promote SEL among young children. The target population consisted of 54 kindergarten teachers of Kindergarten Years 1-3 from 15 schools in the teaching practicum network of the Early Childhood Education Program, Faculty of Education, Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University. The study instrument was a questionnaire, with Item-Objective Congruence index of 1.00 for all items and the overall reliability was 0.974. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, S.D., and the Modified Priority Needs Index (PNImodified) technique for prioritization.

The findings show that 1) teachers’ current practices in organizing learning experiences to promote SEL in young children were rated at a high level across all aspects. The aspect with the highest mean score was the use of instructional media and environment management, followed by evaluation of learning experiences, planning and design of learning experience, and learning experience implementation respectively. The desired conditions for teachers’ practices in organizing learning experiences to promote SEL among young children were rated at the highest level across all aspects. 2) The highest priority for teacher development was the implementation of learning experience (PNImodified = 0.34), followed by planning and design of learning experience (PNImodified = 0.33), evaluation of learning experiences (PNImodified = 0.32), and the use of instructional media and environment management (PNImodified = 0.30).
