Abstract

The dietary supplementation effects of mono-calcium phosphate (MCP) and di-calcium phosphate (DCP) at 1.3% available phosphorus were investigated in juvenile Nieuhofii’s catfish (Clarias nieuhofii), in comparison to control diet without inorganic phosphate. Fifteen juvenile Nieuhofii’s catfish with average body weight of 0.55-0.56 g/fish were reared in each 70 l glass aquarium, composing 4 replications per treatment. The fish were fed twice a day for 10 weeks. The highest average body, weight gain and specific growth rate were observed in catfish fed with DCP diet (p < 0.05). However, feed conversion, survival, and carcass composition, in terms of moisture, lipid and ash, were not significantly different among treatments (p > 0.05). The carcass protein content was higher in the fish fed both MCP and DCP diets compared to the control fish. Fish fed with DCP diet had highest protein and lipid retention, whereas the lowest those values but highest phosphorus retention were found in fish fed with control diet (p < 0.05). However, calcium and phosphorus, in bone and carcass, were not significantly different among treatments (p > 0.05). This study concluded that DCP is a high potential source of inorganic phosphorus for Nieuhofii’s catfish.
