Abstract

This study was conducted to examine an appropriate technique for vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Fungi (AMF) inoculum production. Three factors under investigation in this study included production systems, the presence of AMF and host plant species. The three factors were compared under a factorial in completely randomized experimental design. Three host plant species namely, corn (positive control), Ruzi grass and Vetiver as well as two production systems, namely aeroponic system and pot system were being tested. Three months old Ruzi grass inoculated with AMF and grown under an aeroponic system (A+AMF+R) was found to induce the highest root colonization rate (88.0%), whereas Vertiver inoculated with AMF and grown in a pot system produced the highest plant height (141.5 cm/plant). Ruzi grass inoculated with AMF and grown under a pot system displayed the highest root and shoot dry weights of 66.3 and 146.1 g/pot, respectively. Moreover, mycorrhizal responsiveness of Ruzi grass grown under aeroponic system was comparable to that of corn grown under aeroponic system. Maximum amount of spores was produced by Ruzi grass grown under an aeroponic system.
