Phenotypic evaluation and selection of chili (Capsicum annuum) against anthracnose diseases
Main Article Content
Abstract
The anthracnose resistant source was necessary for improvement the good chili varieties resistant to this severe disease. Previously, the progressive lines were selected with Colletotrichum species resistance gene combinations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the chili for resistance to anthracnose disease with the good agronomic traits. In this experiment, the reported 11 progressive lines of chili with different resistant genetic sources, i.e., PBC932 and PBC80 were inoculated with C. capsici and C. acutatum into the 2 chili fruit stages; green mature and ripe mature chili fruit at 35 and 45 days after flowering under the laboratory conditions for diseases. Yield and yield components were evaluated in the field conditions compared with one susceptible, one resistant varieties and one commercial varieties during rainy season (June-October 2018). Considering on the disease resistance together with their yield performance, the three lines; KKU-P11221, KKU-P11235, and KKU-P11211 are the good lines with target traits. The disease response of the KKU-P11221 was resistance to the two Colletotrichum species at the two fruit development stages. The KKU-P11235 was resistance to C. capsici at mature green fruit stage and resistance to C. acutatum at the two fruit development stages, and KKU-P11211 was resistance to the two Colletotrichum species at mature green fruit stage. All three mentioned lines might be used as the genetic sources for improving the good chili variety with resistance to this disease thereafter.
