Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the interaction effects between fertilizer treatment (FT) and application method (AM) on yield and zinc (Zn) accumulation in wetland (CNT1) and upland (KH CMU) rice varieties. The four fertilizer treatments of (1) local treatment (control), (2) local treatment + Zn, (3) local treatment + N, P and K, and (4) local treatment + N, P, K and Zn were applied by using two difference application methods of soil and foliar applications. Both soil and foliar fertilizer applications were applied at tillering, booting and flowering stages. At maturity, plants were harvested to determine yield and the samples of brown rice were analyzed for Zn concentration. The result showed that grain yield was the highest increased up to 38.9% by soil application of N-P-K-Zn when compared with the local treatment. Foliar and soil applications of Zn, N-P-K and N-P-K-Zn increased 27.8% grain Zn concentration in KH CMU which was higher than the local treatment, while it was increase by 23.3% in soil application of N-P-K and N-P-K-Zn in CNT1. The result showed a positive correlation between grain yield and Zn concentration in CNT1 (r = 0.78, P < 0.05), but such the correlation was not found in KH CMU. This experiment indicated that the wetland and upland rice varieties responded differently to Zn fertilizer management for grain yield and Zn accumulation. The results from this study would be useful for the selection of appropriate fertilizer management for increasing grain yield and Zn accumulation in rice cultivation which would be benefits for both farmers and consumers
