Analysis of costs and returns for thunyasirin rice seed and paddy production in Thung Pong sub-district, Ubolratana district, Khon Kaen province

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the overview situation of farmers that grow Thunyasirin rice; specifically, to analyze production costs and returns, and to resolve problems and reduce obstacles for both seed and paddy production. This research was based on eleven farmers (52.38 percent) that produced rice seed, and ten farmers (47.62 percent) that produced rice paddy. In the analysis of production costs and returns, the farmers that produced Thunyasirin rice seed had an average production cost of 4,034.93 baht/rai, an average return of 8,848.00 baht/ rai, and an average net profit of 4,813.07 baht/rai; whereas the farmers that produced Thunyasirin paddy had an average production cost of 3,962.26 baht/rai, an average return of 5,186.64 baht/rai, and an average net profit of 1,224.38 baht/rai. The production of Thunyasirin rice in both groups encountered problems, such as weeds, natural disasters, and low yield. Thunyasirin rice seed farmers also faced marketing problems, especially a lack of effective distribution channels, while Thunyasirin rice paddy farmers were lacking distribution channels, and hindered by the low price of paddy.
