Abstract

The response of cassava, Huay Bong 80 variety, to chemical fertilizer in Yasothon soil series amended with cassava starch waste and ground limestone for five consecutive years was carried out in a farmer field, Nakhon Ratchasima province. Experimental design was arranged in split plot with four replications. Main plot consisted of eight treatments of soil amendment, while subplot comprising four rates of chemical fertilizer.  Result revealed that the application of all soil amendments significantly resulted in greater fresh tuber yield and starch yield than did the control plot with no addition of which the application of cassava starch waste at the rate of 2,000 kg/rai together with 200 kg/rai of ground limestone gave the highest amounts of 3.92 and 0.94 t/rai, respectively.  Cassava significantly responded best to 32:16:32 kg/rai of N:P2O5:K2O chemical fertilizer, producing the highest fresh tuber yield and starch yield of 3.83 and 0.88 t/rai, respectively, but with no statistical difference to that of the recommended rate (16:8:16 kg/rai of N:P2O5:K2O). Nonetheless, there was no interactive effect between soil amendment and rate of chemical fertilizer on cassava yield of which combined application between 500 kg/rai of cassava starch waste and 200 kg/rai of ground limestone along with 32:16:32 kg/rai of N:P2O5:K2O chemical fertilizer gave the highest fresh tuber yield of 4.55 t/rai but with no statistical difference to other treatment combinations. In addition, almost all treatments involving cassava starch waste at all rates, especially with ground limestone, significantly resulted in greater soil pH, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and potassium in soil at 0-15, 15-30 and 30-45 cm depths than did the control plot. Thus, growing cassava in Yasothon soil series should continuously be applying cassava starch waste at the rate of 1,000 kg/rai and ground limestone at the rate of 200 kg/rai together with chemical fertilizer at the rate of 16:8:16 kg N:P2O5:K2O/rai which is economical sound and can improve soil quality.
