Identifying Best-fit Distribution for Tourist Expenditure per Person in the Southern Gulf of Thailand Provincial Cluster before Global Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

            This research aims to 1) study tourist expenditure per person in the southern gulf of Thailand provincial cluster; 2) determine the best-fit distribution of tourist expenditure per person in the southern gulf of Thailand provincial cluster; 3) determine the distribution parameters of tourist expenditure per person in the southern gulf of Thailand provincial cluster; and 4) examine the expected value of expenditure per person for Thai and international tourists. Descriptive and inferential statistics analyses were conducted on data obtained by questionnaires collected from Thai and International tourists who visited the southern gulf of Thailand provincial cluster.

            The results reveal that 1) average Thai tourist expenditure per person in the southern gulf of Thailand provincial cluster was 14.34 hundred baht/person/day and average international tourist expenditure per person in the southern gulf of Thailand provincial cluster was 38.53 hundred baht/person/day. Standard deviation for tourist expenditure per person for Thai and international tourists were at 13.27 hundred baht/person/day and 43.63 hundred baht/person/day, respectively; 2) log-normal distribution was found to best describe tourist expenditure per person in the southern gulf of Thailand provincial cluster; 3) parameter estimations for log-normal distribution of tourist expenditure per person were found to be as follows: for Thai tourists:  = 2.3615602 and  = 0.7846651 and for International tourists:  = 3.2793602 and  = 0.8320009; and 4) overall tourist expenditure per person of international tourists was found to  be generally higher than that of Thai tourists.
