Commercial Production System of Betong Chicken in Three Southern Border Provinces (Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat)

The objective of this study was to investigate the implement of commercial Betong chicken production system of farmers in Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces. The data were collected from 9 farmers and 2 agents by purposive sampling method. Structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews were designed and collected, and qualitative analysis was used for data analysis. The result showed that the commercial Betong chicken production was operated in the form of network, which could be classified into 3 groups. Group 1: breeding farms, which produced chicks about 600-700 chicks per week, and sale price about 26-40 Baht per chick. Group 2: fattening farms, farmers brooded chicks for about 14-21 days, and hence after reared in house until the age of 8-10 weeks before allowing to raise under their own rearing system until reaching the market weight of 2.0-2.5 kg for male and 1.5-2.0 kg for female. This took about 120-180 days. In this study, three rearing system: indoor, semi-free range, and free range system; were found in this area. However, the semi-free range system was the most accepted one. Considering the feeding system, commercial pellet containing 21% and 16-21% crude protein, were provided to chickens during brooding and growing stage, respectively. At finishing stage, mixed diet containing commercial pellet and cooked rice was given. Group 3: the chicken collection agent, the chickens were bought alive from local farms for slaughter at the price of 110-170 Baht per kg.
