Smallholder Oil Palm Growing Farmers’ Needs in Extension Methods of Oil Palm Farming in Satun Province

Human capital is essential to successful management of oil palm production, marketing, including handle some problems in oil palm farming. Therefore, this survey research aimed to find out the smallholder oil palm growing farmers’ needs in extension methods of oil palm farming in Satun province. The primary data were collected using structured interviews, non-participant observations, natural conversations, and in-depth interviews from 387 smallholder farmers, using the mixed method sampling technique. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and manifest content analysis. The empirical results showed that the smallholder oil palm growing farmers need a high level in extension methods of oil palm farming, i.e., educating by role model farmer (group method), visiting the farms (individual method), practicing (group method), lecturing (group method), and handing out necessary handbook and document (mass method). The results will be useful for related government agencies in order to formulate appropriate agricultural extension methods.
