Abstract

The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of IGF2 genotype on growth performance and carcass characteristics in swine. The study was an on-farm research in Pakchong, Nakornratchasima province. The data for growth and carcass trait of pure breed Duroc (DR), Pietrain (PT) and Pietrain x Duroc crossbred (PTxDR) from tested pigs at final weight of 90-110 kg. and final age of 22-24 wks. from 2005 to 2008 was used in the analysis. All pigs were raised separately by gender and fed on requirement. Genotypes of IGF2 gene were analyzed from DNA using PCR-RFLP and predicted from known sire and dam genotypes. Analysis model included effects of IGF2 adjust with gender, breed, Halothane gene and allele B from sire and dam. In model with unadjust allele B effect, the result showed that IGF2 genotype had effect on lean percentage (aLEAN) (P<0.05), fat depth (aFD) and ham width (HW) P<0.01), but not effect on loin muscle area (aLMA), body length (BL), shoulder width (SW), body width (BW) and day to finish (DTF) (P>0.05). In model with adjust allele B effect, the result showed that allele B from sire had significant effect on aLEAN (P<0.05), while allele B from dam had non-significant effect (P>0.05). The effect of allele B from sire was +0.58%. This result confirmed the paternal expression or maternal imprinting of IGF2 allele on aLEAN. However, allele B from both sire and dam had effect on aFD and ham width (HW) (P<0.05). Therefore, no genomic imprinting was found in these traits. IGF2 could be used as a candidate gene for improving carcass characteristics in swine breeding plan.
