Abstract

The synergistic super sweet corn inbred line development is one strategy to enhance the eating quality of waxy corn hybrid. However, the major problem of this inbred lines is seed germination and vigor in seed production. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluated seed germination, seed vigor, total sugar and starch of super sweet corn in the endosperm of double and triple recessive gene combinations. Six genotypes of single, double and triple recessive gene combinations and four check varieties were compared. The results of this study found that double recessive gene combination B53 (btbt sh2sh2 WxWx) had the highest total starch followed by C4 (btbt Sh2Sh2 wxwx) which was not different with D22 (BtBt sh2sh2 wxwx) and B10 (btbt sh2sh2 wxwx) at maturity stages. Moreover, the highest of total sugar level was found in double recessive C4 (btbt Sh2Sh2 wxwx) and triple recessive B10 (btbt sh2sh2 wxwx) at the fresh stage. Furthermore, the single recessive TSC/Su75 and TSC/H3 (BtBt sh2sh2 WxWx), double recessive C4 (btbt Sh2Sh2 wxwx) and triple recessive B10 (btb sh2sh2 wxwx) had good germination and high vigor. After the accelerated aging test, poor germination and vigor were observed if bt or sh2gene combines with wx gene. In addition, there was no correlated between total starch, total sugar with germination percentage and speed of germination. The information obtained in this study is important for selection of inbred parents of sweet corn hybrids and planning of seed production.
