Abstract
This study was aimed to determine the buffalo raising conditions, satisfaction on community
services of local farmers in Phayao province. Data were collected from open-ended and closed-ended
questions by interview from 62 farmers. To analyze the percentage, standard deviation and SWOT
analysis. Study 1: information of buffalo raising farmers were mostly males (87.10%) who graduated from
primary school (93.55%). They raised buffalos as the main occupation (66.13%) and had experienced in
farming 14±1.95 years. The purpose of raising was to produce buffalo calves for selling (100%). Local
farmers received breeder buffalos from their inheritances (53.23%) and no recorded pedigrees. They
extensively raised buffaloes in pasture supplemented with a mineral block. Farmers bred their animals
naturally (100%) and gave vaccinated of Hemorrhagic Septicemia and Foot and Mouth Diseases (100%)
by livestock officers, and sold live buffaloes to middlemen. Study 2: SWOT analysis was used to evaluate
buffalo production in Phayao province. The Strength (S) point was the famers related to this community for
the collective contribution to the knowledge to improve buffalo production. Weakness (W) points were the
limitation of number of buffalos raised in the area and the occurrence of potential inbreeding. The
Opportunity (O) was government’s supported funding to improve buffalo raising. The Threats (T) was
buffalos in this area for raising and turning outcome slower than other farm animals including broilers,
layers, pigs and cattle. Study 3: it was about satisfaction with academic services on improving nutritive
value of corn husks or rice straws and the improvement of breeding buffalos by using artificial insemination.
We found that participants (62%) satisfied with the process of transferring and applying this knowledge in
their farm (55%). Satisfaction of local farmers was 85% on culture maintenance with the activities of
buffalo welcome ceremony and plow training. In conclusion buffalo raising farmers were mostly males,
graduated from primary school and purpose of raising to produce buffalo calves for selling. They bred
their animals naturally and sold live buffaloes to middlemen. Weakness points were the limitation of number
of buffalos raised in the area and the occurrence of potential inbreeding. Participants were satisfied with
knowledge transfer activities and buffalo welcome ceremony and plow training activities.
