Increasing Capacity for Growth Performance of Butter catfish (Ompok siluroides) Using Local Rice “Khai Mod Rin” Rice Bran as a Protein Source in the Diet
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of utilizing local rice bran (Khai Mod Rin variety) as an alternative carbohydrate source on the growth performance of butter catfish (Ompok siluroides). A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was employed with five dietary treatments and three replications: a control group (KMR 0%) and four treatment groups supplemented with Khai Mod Rin rice bran (KMR) at inclusion levels of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% (KMR 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%). All experimental diets contained 32% crude protein, 7–11% crude lipid, and 3,300 kcal/kg of energy. Butter catfish with an average initial weight ranging from 5.51 to 5.63 g per fish were fed the experimental diets for 12 weeks. The results indicated that fish fed KMR-supplemented diets exhibited significantly higher growth performance and feed utilization efficiency than those in the control group (p < 0.05). Specifically, the KMR 20% group achieved the highest final weight, weight gain, length gain, specific growth rate, and protein efficiency ratio, while exhibiting the lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) (p < 0.05). In terms of survival rate, the KMR 20% group recorded the highest value (90.60±0.10%), significantly outperforming the control and other treatment groups (p<0.05), whereas the KMR 40% group showed the lowest survival rate (86.89±0.32%). Furthermore, polynomial regression analysis of the relationship between weight gain and dietary KMR inclusion levels revealed that the optimum inclusion level was 19.86%, which was consistent with the experimental findings showing that the KMR 20% group produced the highest weight gain (23.96±0.24 g). In conclusion, supplementation of Khai Mod Rin rice bran at a dietary inclusion level of 20% serves as an effective alternative carbohydrate source, providing the highest efficiency in promoting growth performance and improving feed utilization in butter catfish.
