Antibacterial Activity of Strobilanthes cusia (Nees) Kuntze Crude Extract

Abstract

Strobilanthes cusia (Nees) Kuntze is a glabrous shrub plant that is often cultivated for dye in Phrae province. This main purpose of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of crude extracts from different parts (leaf, stem and root) of S. cusia using different solvents. Hexane, dichloromethane and ethanol were used as extraction solvents. Antibacterial activity of each extract was tested using an in vitro disc diffusion assay and the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by the broth microdilution method. The dichloromethane crude extract (DCE) from the leaves at the concentration of 0.5 g/ml showed the highest antibacterial activity of all the bacterial strains. The results showed that Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus were more susceptible to DCE than other strains with an inhibition zone diameter of 20.33-24.67 and 20.67-22.00 mm, respectively. The MIC values of DCE were 256 and 128 µg/ml against S. aureus and B. cereus, respectively. However, the crude extract from stem (conc. 0.1 g/ml) and root (conc. 0.02 g/ml) parts of this plant showed only antibacterial activity on gram-positive bacteria strains. This work proposes a new use for S. cusia, as a new antibacterial agent rather than its traditional use as a dye.
