A Field Study: Effect of Virgin Coconut Oil on the Reduction of Gastrointestinal Vibrio spp. in Pacific Whiteleg Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei)

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth inhibitory effects of virgin coconut oil (VCO) on Vibrio spp. in gastrointestinal tract of Pacific white shrimps (Litopenaeus vannamei). Shrimps were fed with 3 different types of feed, feed without VCO (the control), feed with 3% VCO and feed with 6% VCO. The samples were collected at 48 and 96 hours after feeding. The population of Vibrio spp. in CFU/ml were decreased in shrimps fed with VCO-mixed feed and significantly lower (p<0.05) in population of V. alginolyticus in shrimp fed with VCO-mixed feed. The differece between feed with 3 and 6% could not be observed. This study suggested that VCO had the growth inhibitory effects on Vibrio spp. in healthy shrimps, and could replace using of chemicals and antibiotics in shrimp production.
